Happy Halloween!

We celebrated Black and Orange Day on October 31st!  What a busy, busy day!  We began our day with our Super Science Wednesday experiment.  We talked about the word "reaction"!  Look at what happened when we mixed baking soda and vinegar (the vinegar had been mixed with food colouring).  What a reaction!  We saw bubbles, heard sizzling and it even looked like a water fall as the mixture poured out of our jack o'lantern!  This is a super easy (but messy) experiment to try at home.  It was a big hit in our classroom this morning.  Of course, as all good scientists do, we recorded on results on paper and will be putting this together to make a book!

After 1st nutrition break, we began our Black and Orange Day center activities.  It seems the center that everyone liked best was cupcake decorating!  We also sorted, graphed and counted Halloween shapes.  We moved to some music and especially enjoyed "The Skeleton Dance".  Mrs. Lounsbury read us a story with flannel board pieces and we had some fun painting Halloween shapes!

What a great day!   Thanks very much to our parent and grandparent volunteers who joined us for our Black and Orange Day!  We hope everyone enjoyed a safe and happy Halloween!

Apple and Pumpkins

We continued our learning about "fall" this week at school.

We explored a recipe as we made applesauce.  We made a graph showing whether we liked the applesauce or whether we did not like the taste of it!

We made some of our very own "paper bag" pumpkins.  Your child should have taken his/her little pumpkin home.  We hope you found a special spot for this treasure!

We had lots of fun opening up pumpkins and talking about what was inside the pumpkin.  Some of our friends loved sticking their hand inside the pumpkin and some didn't even want to try!  Lot of great describing words were used during this activity!

We worked in 2 groups to carve the pumpkins.  Each group had to decide what type of face to put on the jack o'lantern.  We counted and used a tally chart to help us figure out what type of eyes, nose and mouth to make.

This is our "Leaf Man", along with our Leaf Man poem.  We are exploring rhyming words together and this poem has  some rhymes in it.  The students are getting really good at identifying rhymes in songs and stories that we read!

Our Trip to the Fire Station

On Friday October 19th, we went on our first field trip!  It was very exciting to have the opportunity to ride to the Fire Station in the Fire Rescue truck!  Take a look at our photos of this special outing.  Can you remember some fire safety rules that we discussed on our trip?  On Monday we will be participating in a "shared writing" activity in which we will write down some of the fire safety rules we learned.

All aboard the Fire Rescue truck!
We are learning how to do "stop, drop and roll"!

We need to remind our moms and dads to check the smoke detectors in our homes!

Remember to feel the door to see if it is hot!  Use the back of your hand to check the door!

We saw all the equipment that the firefighters wear!

We know that we should never be afraid of a firefighter.  If there was a fire in our house, we know that we never hide.

It was great trip!  Thanks so much to the firefighters for a wonderful learning opportunity.  Thanks also to all the parents who joined us on our outing!

Signs of Fall

Today we went on a short fall walk around the school yard to look for signs of fall.  We recorded the signs of fall on a paper.  This is what we found:
  • bare trees
  • red bush
  • leaves on the ground
  • bare branches
  • windy
  • cool, cold weather
  • different colours of leaves
We are looking for more leaves for our art center.  Your child is welcome to bring in any leaves he/she might have collected from outside your home.  We are trying to sort the leaves by shape and learn about the different types of leaves we find.

Together Fridays!

Have you heard what happens in our JK/SK classes on Fridays?  Each Friday, on our last block of playtime, we have "together playtime" with the kindergarten class next door.   First, we all gather together to sing, listen to a story or use the Smartboard.   Then, the children are free to explore in both of the kindergarten classrooms.  This is a great opportunity for the children to try new activities and to socialize with students from the other class.  The children are loving this special time of the week.  Here are some photos of the students learning through play in both the classrooms!
