A Trip to the Fire Hall

We continued in our learning about community helpers on our trip to the Gesto Fire Hall.
We learned about the important role of fire fighters in our community.

We were very excited to see Sparky the fire dog!

We learned that we should not be afraid of fire fighters.

It was so much fun to use the big fire hose!

We practise "crawl low under smoke" and "stop, drop and roll".

We got to explore some of the different tools the fire fighters use.

It was a great trip to the Fire Hall.
Thanks so much to the many parents who joined us on this outing!

A Visit from a Police Officer

We are currently learning about community helpers.
Miss Corey, our student teacher, arranged a surprise visit from a police officer.
This visit offered the students a chance to learn about the important role of police officers in our community.
We learned that we should never be afraid of police officers and that it is their job to help us.
We also learned how to call 911 in case of an emergency.
We had the opportunity to talk about the different tools that a police officer uses.

Next adventure...our visit to the Gesto Fire Hall!

This Week in Kindergarten...

This week, we worked on turning our dramatic play center into a "vacation center".  Here is a friend painting a box that will be a boat in our new center.  Look for more pictures coming soon of this new center.

The children love building with blocks! This week, the students were challenged to add "labels" to their block creations.  This group of students used yellow sticky notes to label different parts of their block structure.

During our Super Science investigation this week, we experimented with the effect of shaving cream and food coloring on paper.

As we continue our learning about measurement, we began to explore the concept of "measuring time".  Here we are discussing the different parts of our day and the order in which we do things throughout the day.  We are learning about how clocks help us measure time.

With the arrival of some beautiful weather, we took a little extra time to get outside with some outdoor play equipment, such as the tricycles and parachute.

We read stories by author Laura Numeroff throughout the week.  This author writes a collection of stories, such as "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" and "If You Give a Dog a Doughnut".  The children enjoyed creating surveys related to these stories and making artwork about the characters in the books.

Nature Show and Share

Thanks to all of our friends for bringing in natural objects for our leader of the day activity.  We have enjoyed seeing a wide variety of items, such as pinecones, bird nests, rocks, antlers and tadpoles! We sometimes had to refer to books and the internet to gain further information about the items following our large group discussions.   We hope you continue to enjoy the wonders of nature during this spring season!

Understanding RAIN

During our Super Science Wednesday, we explored the topic of "rain".  We did the following simple experiment, which you may enjoy trying at home!

We took a clear cup and filled it partly with water.
The water represents the atmosphere.
Then, we put shaving cream on the top.
The shaving cream represents the clouds.

We added drops of blue food colouring.
The food colouring represents the rain.
As the cloud gets heavy with the rain, the rain comes out of the cloud into the atmosphere.

Then, we got a little silly....
We imagined if rain drops came in different colours.
Look at the beautiful colors!!

MEASURING WORMS!

We are continuing to explore the concept of measurement.  We are beginning by measuring length and distance.  Each student got to make their very own "measuring worm".  Today, we took our math learning to the hallway.  We used "measurement" and "estimation" to explore how far our measuring worms would go lined up down the hallway.

Back in the classroom, we used different "non-standard" measuring devices to measure our worms.  We used crayons, popsicle sticks, paper clips and cubes.

Our next exploration in measurement will be exploring
mass and capacity.

Fruit Smoothie Day

Another adventure in our Kindergarten cooking... we made fruit smoothies!

The children enjoyed helping to cut the fruit into smaller pieces and help measure some of the ingredients.

The children were eager to try a few different types of smoothies! Thanks to Mrs. Brockman for her help in making the smoothies with our class.
