A Huge Project by JK/SK

If you walked by the JK/SK classes on Wednesday, you would have heard lots of excitement!  Our kindergarten class took on the big task of making a chain link that stretched all the way from our class into Mrs. DiLaudo's class.

The project started with just a few friends from our class trying to make a long chain with the linking toy.  Ms. Ducharme engaged with the students in this activity and we decided to see whether we had enough links to go from one side of our class to the other.

The fun and learning didn't stop there.  The children then wanted to see if we could make the link chain stretch all the way through the cubby room to Mrs. DiLaudo's doorway.  Guess what?  We did it.  Mrs. DiLaudo's class got in on the excitement and they continued the link chain all the way across their classroom!

What was the learning here?

Estimation
Counting (Yes, we counted groups of 100!!)
Measurement
Fine Motor Development
and of course...co-operation, turn-taking and problem-solving!

Here are some photos of our fun!  The entire class got involved and were beyond excited in their accomplishment!
Great hands-on learning!

Making Vegetable Soup!

After reading the story, "Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert, our kindergarten class made our own vegetable soup.

Take a look at our wonderful chefs!

The Pizza Center is Open!

Welcome to the JK/SK Pizza Shop!

"Roll a Pizza" was a fun math game we played during our math learning time.  We created a huge pizza by rolling the dice and counting different toppings!

The students did a great job creating menus, posters and signs.

We deliver!!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

This week at school, we continued to read books written and/or illustrated by Lois Ehlert.  We enjoyed the books
 "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and
 "Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3".

Take a look at some of the activities we did this week related to these stories.

We played the "Chicka Chicka" letter find game using bingo dabbers.  It was fun trying to match letters and their sounds!

We made our very own "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" coconut trees!

We became authors!  Each student made their very own page for our class "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Kindergarten" big book.

The book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" is about a coconut tree.  We investigated coconuts using our 5 senses.  Mrs. Stecher cracked open a coconut.  We passed it around and shared our observations.

We had a taste test using coconut.  We made a tally chart to show how many friends liked the taste of coconut and how many friends did not like the taste of coconut.  We discovered more friends liked the taste of coconut.

Have you heard of "Hot Potato"?  Well, we played "Hot Coconut".    The children had to pass the coconut quickly.  When the music stopped, the friend holding the coconut had to pick out of the mystery bag and identify the letter/number that was picked.

We recorded all the letters/numbers picked during the "Hot Coconut" game on chart paper.

Here is a link to the "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" song we enjoyed this week.
