BAKING SUN BREAD

We are continuing our inquiry of baking.  We have read different versions of the story "The Little Red Hen" this week.  We also read a story called "Sun Bread".  We decided to make our Super Science Wednesday investigation about making bread.  We talked about yeast, dough, mixing, rising, baking and the science of baking.  We really weren't sure it was going to work, but thanks to the wonderful baking skills of Mrs. Allan our end result was some very yummy "sun bread".

Take a look at our friends making "sun bread".

The final product…sun bread!

The best part…trying a sample of the bread!

The Bakery is Open

We quickly got back to business this week by working together to create a classroom bakery.  The children were all involved in some way in getting this center up and running quickly, whether it was printing letters on a sign, creating artwork to decorate the new center or helping to plan the layout of the furniture.

Thanks to the many families who have already donated some materials to our bakery center.  The children are having a great time engaging in play at this center!

Next week we will be reading different versions of the story "The Little Red Hen" as it relates to the idea of baking.

This is a list some of the children created of the things we would need for the baking center.  They used their "best guess spelling" to sound out the words.

We came up with some words that related to the "bakery" and printed them on word cards.

A popular part of the play is working the cash register.  The children love using the play money!

We have incorporated the use of play dough into this center too!

We love Robert Munsch

Over the past two weeks, we have enjoyed reading many stories by Canadian author Robert Munsch.  The children especially enjoyed the story "The Paperbag Princess" and had a lot of fun acting out this story.

Check out the following link to Robert Munsch's website for more information and activities related to his stories.

Measuring Around the Room

Our current math focus is on measurement.  After reading the story "David's Father" by Robert Munsch, we measured the length of what we imagined David's father's footprint to be…David's father is a giant in case you don't know the story!  Then we decided to measure each of our footprints.  We used a non-standard measuring device - cubes.  We took all of our results, recorded on paper and then made a graph.

Our next measuring adventure was to measure using a "standard measuring tool".  We worked in small groups to build structures using different class materials, such as straws, foam blocks and wooden blocks.  We used a meter stick and tape measure and we recorded our measurements again.  Take a look at the great things we built cooperatively in our small groups!
