Shaving Cream Art

On Friday, Mrs. Allan put shaving cream at the art centre.  We had lots of fun getting our hands in the shaving cream and we used lots of great words to describe how the shaving cream felt.  We made letters and words in the shaving cream.  We also used some tools, such as scrapers and plastic knives to experiment with designs in the shaving cream.  Take a look at a few of our friends enjoying this center activity!  This is a great activity to try at home!  As the children use the shaving cream, it eventually "disappears"!  So, it may look messy, but really it isn't and it is lots of fun!

Check out what we did today for "Super Science Wednesday"!!!

Each Wednesday our class participates in a science event that we call "Super Science Wednesday".  Often this involves an experiment and we talk about our predictions, observations and conclusions.  Today we did something a little different as we took our learning outside...

Together with our friends from Mrs. Burkhart and Mrs. Lounsbury's class, we will be participating in an environmentally friendly activity.  We will be creating our very own "kinderGARDEN" right outside our school.  This is a big project for our many little hands (we may even get some help from some of the big kids in the school)!  Take a look at how we started today.

This is the area that we will be changing into our "kinderGARDEN".  We talked about what it looks like now.

Our first step is to remove all these rocks!

But wait...under all these rocks there are lots of interesting things.  One of our friends found a worm!

We decided to use a wagon to load up the rocks we don't need.  Rocks are very interesting to kindergarten children, so we also decided to keep some for our classroom.  We'll be describing, sorting, cleaning and having lots of fun with rocks tomorrow!

Isn't is amazing how different rocks can be?  There are many colours, patterns, shapes and textures to explore!

Back in the classroom, we used PICTURES and WORDS to list all the things we found under the rocks.

Pete the Cat

Have you heard about Pete the Cat?  Over the past few days we have been enjoying stories about Pete the Cat as he goes to school and walks around with his school shoes.  The children have had the opportunity to watch the story on the Smartboard with our friends from Mrs. Burkhart and Mrs. Lounsbury's JK/SK class.  We also read the books, created our very own paper shoes and made sentences about what we do in our "school shoes".  Check out the following links and before you know you'll be singing along with Pete the Cat too!

What a Great First Week!

During our first week of the Early Learning Program, JK/SK, we were very impressed how quickly the students learned the routines of the class.  The children are quickly becoming more independent upon arriving at school as they put on their indoor shoes, take out their mailbag, put their lunches in their cubby and hang up their backpacks.

Here are just a few photos of the children at play during our first week at school.

Many of the students were excited to explore the dramatic play area and loved dressing up.  This lead to  some of the girls building a stage with the blocks and having different children "sign-up" on the clipboard to perform for their classmates.

Some of the other students were extremely interested in the "gears" toy.  We are always amazed at the great things the children build and it is a wonderful opportunity to have the students answer questions about their creations.

We are fortunate to have lots of new puzzles in our classroom and this was a popular play activity this week.  What a great way to develop cooperative play skills as we work together on assembling a puzzle!

Welcome to JK/SK

Welcome to Mrs. Ducharme & Mrs. Allan's JK/SK class.  We are so excited to begin the 2012/2013 school year. We've been busy getting the classroom ready and have lots of new activities for your child to explore.  Just a few reminders:

  • All students  should have a pair of indoor shoes that can be left at school.  This shoes should be appropriate for the gym.
  • All student should have an extra set of clothes that can be left in their cubby in case there is a need to change.
  • All students who ride the bus will be given a purple bus tag.  This tag will be put on your child's backpack on Monday.  Please leave this on as it helps bus drivers and other school staff identify kindergarten students.
We hope you will continue to check this blog regularly for updates on things we are doing at school, ideas for at-home learning, photographs of our learning and information about school events.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!  See all my kindergarten friends on Monday morning!
